The 1st FLY Event successfully took place on 22nd November 2017 with a line of inspirational guest speakers and attendance of 50 participants from 10 universities across Kuala Lumpur. Set at International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW), the event commenced with opening remarks by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Mr. Stephen Lloyd Griffiths.
The event kick-started with ‘Practical Tips to becoming a GOOD Social Entrepreneur’ Workshop conducted by AirAsia Foundation. The two hours workshop showed participants the best practices of ASEAN social enterprises and also took them through assessment processes to help them prepare in approaching potential funders effectively.
“It is the best university workshop that I’ve done. I’ve done about four to five this year and this is the most engaging group. They have done a very thorough assessment of all the application and I’m very glad with how much thought they have put into it”, said AirAsia Foundation Projects Executive Diane Foo who was accompanied by Kathleen Largo during the workshop.
The event also featured an ‘Empowerment Talk Show’ session with three prominent Malaysian entrepreneurs; Managing Partner and Chief Master Trainer of Life Success Resources, Dr Niki Shuhada Shukor; Co-founder and CEO of Tripfez, Faeez Fadhlillah and Co-founder and CEO of Skolafund, Tengku Syamil. Besides exchanging their life and achievement stories, the star entrepreneurs also shared tips and motivation to participants on how to overcome challenges in business endeavours.
“This is a good awareness program. It is eye opening and gives motivation to young entrepreneurs to start in social ventures”, said Dr Niki Shuhada. Being known as No. 1 Empowerment Coach in Malaysia, she has been trained to be a Master Trainer by Datuk Dr Lawrence Walter Ng, the late Datuk Wira Dr Hajah Maznah Hamid, Bob Proctor and J.T Foxx from United States.
FLY, acronym for Front Liner Youth was held for the purpose of helping youth entrepreneurs looking into their business growth and creating better business practices. Organised solely by three committee members; Muhammad Danial Asyraf bin Abdullah, Sarah Alia binti Ahmad Affendy and Ahmed Adel bin Abdel Aziz, who are students from IUMW, have received multiple commends for their effort in organising such event. The organiser managed to gather sponsorship from various organisations on top of raising funds through crowdfunding effort to make the event happened.
Tengku Syamil, who was also named as Forbes 30 under 30 Asia last year expressed his astonishment by saying “I’ve always attended university programs and this is one of the best student-organised events that I have ever attended. It blew my mind further when I found out there are only 3 people in the team. I really love the concept and really love how it has been executed.”
With guest and speakers and participants being universally complimentary, the organising committee decided to move forward with organising another FLY event next year with bigger and better plans in hopes to inspire more youth entrepreneurs.
